A Washington, DC press photographer vents about the political wranglings in our Nation's Capital.
Though I do believe in aliens and love the beach. I better keep thinking.

Who did you vote for in the Primary Election of 2004? And why? How does that vote -- or the reasoning behind that vote -- affect your actions this go around?

Remember in November of 2004, Howard Dean was the annointed frontrunner and presumptive nominee of the Democratic Primary. Poll after poll showed Dean ahead -- he was the Internet money raising darling and the new type of candidate. Then......".....EEEEEEAAAAAAWWWWWHHHHHHHH!!!!!!"

Now, Dean is the Chairman of the DNC. And the Democrats ended up with John Kerry. Boy, that worked out well.

Why Kerry? Simple. The Dems decided he could win against Bush. A decorated war hero, he looked good on paper. The Dems ignored his lackluster campaign and wooden speech style.

Fastforward to 2007. Hillary is the frontrunner. Some people are planning on voting for Clinton because .... she is the front runner. The GOP's are rejoicing, they see (according to Newt Gingrich) their best chance of winning '08 is if Hillary is the nominee.

So who do you vote for? I know, I know, you vote on what the candidate believes. If you can even figure that out.

Do you vote on what they believe on a single, wedge issue? Do you vote fo America's Mayor if you are prolife? Does G have the best chance of winning against H? Do you swallow your stomach and overlook G's support of gay rights?

I can tell you this. I've decided to vote based on issues that are the most important to me, and not on whether I think the nominee CAN win. In the Democratic primary last go round, I voted for Sharpton.

I knew Al would never, ever win the primary, let alone a general election. I voted for him anyway because I thought he showed courage and conviction and answered questions with answers. He was as liberal as possible. He might be crooked. And, he was FUNNY. Sarcastic. Miles from Dean, Kerry and Pretty Boy Floyd (or as Rush Limbaugh dubbed him, Breck Boy).

This go 'round, I don't know what I'll do. Maybe I'll write Sharpton in. That'll drive every one of my friends even more crazy than last election. Kucinich (god knows if my spelling is even close) looks good. He believes in UFOs, right? I believe in UFOs. Hmmm. I hadn't concidered that. Plus he wants to impeach Veep. Hmmm...I have the chore of photographing Veep every once in a while, and I ALWAYS swear I will get a picture where he's not smirking. So far, no luck. Hmmmm....K's two for two. Or, there is the other pretty boy. I mean, of course, Delaware's plagarist. Hmmm....I've ripped off a few ideas in my life.....Hmmm....I do like the beaches in Delaware.....Hmmm....Man, I have a lot to digest.

I better go watch CNN.

I think that Richardson would be a president in the Clinton (Bill - not hillary) mode without the Scandals. SO I could vote for him (but not based upon his current stated positions).

I'm almost afraid to respond to this. I LIKE Clinton's leadership style. Not his choice of women, mind you. (What did he see in Monica? I can tell you, I spend lots of time at the Capitol and some time, every once in a while at the WH, and there are FAR hotter babes who would pork the pres in a heartbeat just to have the chance...) I always thought Clinton was a down the center -- mind out of the gutter -- kinda guy. Lots of what he did, I liked. Some (NAFTA) I did not. To say Richardson would be a similar president is a remarkable endorsement over Hil. Hmmmm.

joe,

With you being in the media, we need to "meet up" some time. I am a Libertarian activist, and will shortly be launching my second run for Texas State Representative. The first time around, in 2006, I garnered 15% of the vote.

I'm also working to form an activist organization to protect families against the abuses of CPS. I don't know where you stand on this, but I'd love to have a discussion with you about it. I am trying to advance my proposals for CPS reform to the Libertarian national party platform.

And in both of these areas it wouldn't hurt to have contacts in the media. I can be reached at handofjustice42 at hotmail dot com.

I'll mull that over and keep it in mind. Are you referring to reform of Child Protective Services? It's not an area I'm very up on, except for some college internship study years ago in cases of child sex abuse. Or is there internet CPS lingo I don't know because I's new here, Ms. Piddy Pat and I's only haves two hands?

That be the one.

do you have any literature/position statement (here or in your files) you could send me? Either point me to an article here or email me one. M

See, I liked NAFTA (but then I am an economist). Clinton, without the scandals was ok. Partly (or mostly) due to the fact congress was in the opposite camp (and I am real close to believing that is good for every election since I waited 40 years to see a republican congress, and then saw it screw things up the last 7 years). But partly because he has always been centrist (he was the darling of the DLC).

I just cannot stomach his need to lie - even when the truth would not hurt. Hillary? No, I wont say she is Hitler in drag because 7 years of hearing that Bush and Cheney are has forever cured me of that clown comparison (Hitler not the comparees), but perhaps it is time to pick on a new idiot. She is Mao in drag. I dont trust her as far as I can throw her bus!

But Richardson? I think he has swung hard left for the nomination. I dont think he has a tinker's chance in hell, but when he was just Gov Richardson, I liked him. Pretty much like Doug Wilder. When he was Gov Wilder, and not Candidate Wilder, he was very good.

We're very close in our beliefs. Have you ever been in Hil's Senate Office? It's a bit disconcerting. Now, I know she's a former first lady. And I know the different members decorate their offices in two themes: 1) to reflect industry or pride in their state or 2) to show you how powerful they are. Hil falls into the later. Every photo is of her or Bill -- and the photos are gigantic. 16" X 20" and up -- poster size.

It reminds me of when you are in a third world country and there are photos of "El Presidente" smiling broadly down at you off every street corner.

As for the split branches (Rep control of one and Dem control of another with a less volitile court) I think it is the best scenario by far, with a few exceptions. It forces 1) Congress to protect the rights of the minority and 2) centrist lawmaking. Of course, I can cite 1000 exceptions to both those comments, but I still believe them to be true.

As opposed to, say, Senator Orrin Hatch's office (a Senator with whom I share little political agreement, but whom I respect deeply). One of the most striking things about his office (at least when I was there) is a large fairly impressive painting signed by the artist, one Ted Kennedy. I always thought it was an impressive show of a bipartisan spirit between the two.

You know, I have been there many times and I never noticed the painting. I'll keep an eye out for it. And I know my response sounds pompous and like I spend all this time in all these offices. Believe me, it's very, very surface -- the epitome of surface. But, the huge poster prints are weird. M
